2010 - 2011 School Year

In its sixth year of providing funds directly to York educators the York Education Foundation was able to award over $21,700 for 4 teacher grants. Below is a summary of these initiatives.

Laying the Foundation for Successful Readers of Nonfiction Texts

$750 awarded to Tony Beaumier, Grade 6 Teacher, YMS. This grant will purchase 30 copies of a common nonfiction book, Palenque, Unearthing Ancient Worlds, to be read by all sixth grade students (150 – 160 students) through guided reading exercises with the language arts teachers.

Hands-On Science” – Enrichment Though Experimentation

$8,250 awarded to Julie Twomey, Grade 1 Teacher, VES, on behalf of VES/CRES K-4 Science Committee. This grant will support the development of units of interactive demonstrations and hands-on experiments to enrich and supplement the current K-4 science curriculum, in collaboration with Karen Plante, a scientist/chemical engineer who has been working with students on a volunteer basis for the past five years.

From Wigglers to Wigglers”

$5,037 awarded to Sean Murphy, CRES Principal. This grant will fund the purchase of a greenhouse structure and related supplies to enable all CRES students to participate in planting, growing, harvesting and eating various types of produce.

YMS Inservice Day at the Browne Center for Innovative Learning

$7,700 awarded to Wendy Porelle, School Counselor, YMS. This grant will support a one-day off-site program for all YMS teachers and staff, emphasizing the application of YMS’s six Guiding Principles and working cooperatively as a team to develop and achieve personal goals.
